下立町にあり、嶺松山と号する、真宗本願寺の末寺です。
永正三年日置で尊宝院と号しましたが、真宗に転じて尊宝寺と改めました。
慶長4年に八上城下、そして篠山城築城後慶長15年に現在の地に移りました。
文化4年立町の大火で類焼し、文化6年に再建され現在に至っています。

表門屋根裏の唐獅子の彫刻は左甚五郎の作と言われ、文化4年の大火の際も、この唐獅子が火を吹き消してこの門だけは類焼を免れたという伝説もあります。
